Introduction to Sufism

The Sufi is considered a seeker of the Truth.

Being Sufi is to put away what is in your head
of imagined truth, preconceptions, conditioning
and to face what may happen to you.

- Abu Said

Sufism is not a philosophy, cult or religion, it is a way of life. It encompasses the essence of all faiths but belongs to none of them. There can be no conflict between Sufism and other spiritual paths because it embodies all methods of thought and each has its usefulness.

People who embark upon the Sufi path choose it with their open heart because they are searching for Truth; they have enthusiasm and a belief in something beyond themselves.

In Sufism, the teacher is a facilitator, someone who has experienced the Path, who is aware of the pitfalls and the ups & downs.

In the spiritual journey,
whoever travels without a guide,
needs two-hundred years
for a two-day journey.

- Rumi

Sufism is not about intellect understanding; it is first of all about realising your Inner Self (see Talks & Articles). This is done using methods that include meditation, prayer, zhikr (chanting) and reflection. All of these things take us back to the point of separation from the Beloved (i.e, God or Creator).

To seek the way of the Sufi through intellect is a work of folly,
you need to seek from your heart like a baby seeking its mother.

- Mir Ali Taleb

There are a lot of paths that attract people by displaying healing, sensory experiences or by giving a taste of the power of the path. In Sufism, students find their own way through individual experience; not by show or intellectual understanding. This path does nothing to attempt to dazzle, amaze or otherwise impress the seeker - everything comes through individual experience and the facilitation of the Pir (teacher).

The Sufi path focuses on the core truth of spirituality – the Unity of Being. Sufism talks about the Beloved from the start.

O you who fear the difficulties of the road of the path, do not fear.
This road is so easy that it may be travelled sleeping.

- Mir Yahya Kashiq
